By now, the cinema as the subject of art has a long tradition. As a rule, works such as those created by Ming Wong also reveal a discursive hierarchy: art functions as a reflective treatment; it establishes a meta-level and uncovers implications. What happens, however, when the source material itself performs the same basic function? After all, Fassbinder’s films are, in their own right, treatments of strongly codified traditions and elements in the history of film – of melodrama, for example.
