Either a future without society or a society without a future

Post-communism, understood as historical condition, is lacking the outlook on the future that was so essential to the communist era. It’s as if the future were itself merely an illusion that has been lost along with the empty promises of the communists—leaving us to live in a reality that, like Freud’s hysterical female patient, ­cannot shake off its past. Living life in the retrospective seems to be an unmistakable feature of today’s post-communist state of affairs.
